Elite Dangerous Material Farming Mining
Three loops cover everything. Manufactured from High Grade Emissions. Encoded from the Jameson Crash Site. Raw from Crystalline Shards. Farm what is abundant, then trade for the rest.
Quick Summary
| Category | Best Method | Location | Gear Needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufactured | High Grade Emissions | Any high population system, filtered by allegiance and state | Collector limpet controller, cargo rack, limpets |
| Encoded | Jameson Crash Site | HIP 12099, planet 1 B | SRV, Detailed Surface Scanner, Data Link Scanner |
| Raw | Crystalline Shards | HIP 36601 and Outotz LS-K D8-3 | SRV, Detailed Surface Scanner, jump range |
1. Manufactured Materials
Why HGEs
Since the July and August 2024 engineering rework, every canister scooped is worth 3 units. The cap per material is 100. One signal will usually take a Grade 5 material from zero to full in one or two drops. Any guide written before mid 2024 badly understates the yield.
Ship Setup
| Module | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Collector Limpet Controller | 1 or 2, size 3A or 5A | A second controller roughly doubles scoop speed |
| Cargo Rack | Around 20 tons | Only ever holds limpets, never the loot |
| Limpets | Around 40 | Bought at any station commodity market |
| Frame Shift Drive | Keep it engineered | More range means faster system hopping |
| Weapons, SRV, AFMU | Not needed | HGEs are empty and non hostile |
Good hulls: Asp Explorer, Diamondback Explorer, Krait Phantom. Materials go into your weightless material storage, not your cargo hold. That is why cargo size only matters for limpets.
The Relog Loop
- Jump into a system matching the material you want. Favor high population.
- Open the Nav panel and filter to Signal Sources only.
- Find a High Grade Emission. Check the timer and aim for 25 or more minutes.
- Drop in. Confirm on the contacts panel that the canisters are the material you want before committing.
- Clear your target, then deploy all limpets at once.
- When you see "no valid collection targets," the instance is empty.
- Quit to desktop or main menu. Log back into the same game mode. Solo is fastest.
- Back in supercruise, set throttle to zero. The same HGE is behind you. Turn around and drop back in.
- Repeat until limpets refuse to collect, meaning you hit the cap of 100.
- Fly to a Manufactured Material Trader and cross trade for the rare materials.
The No Target Trick
This matters more than anything else in the loop. With a canister targeted, each limpet collects that one item and then dies. One limpet, one pickup. With no target selected, limpets switch to free roam. They keep flying, grab every canister in range, and do not expire until there is nothing left to collect. Always clear your target before deploying.
Material to System State Map
| Material | Allegiance | State | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imperial Shielding | Empire | None, Boom, Election | Abundant. The best trade fodder in the game. |
| Core Dynamics Composites | Federation | None | Abundant |
| Proto Heat Radiators | Independent or Alliance | Boom | Common |
| Proto Radiolic Alloys | Independent or Alliance | Boom | Common. Shares spawn conditions with Heat Radiators. |
| Proto Light Alloys | Independent or Alliance | Boom | Grade 4. Same family as the above. |
| Military Grade Alloys | Any | War or Civil War | Common in the right state |
| Military Supercapacitors | Any | War or Civil War | Scarce even in War. Usually faster to trade. |
| Improvised Components | Independent or Alliance | Civil Unrest | Rare state. Trade instead. |
| Pharmaceutical Isolators | Independent or Alliance | Outbreak | Rare state. Trade instead. |
| Proprietary Composites | Federation | None | Grouped with Core Dynamics Composites |
| Biotech Conductors | Not available | Not available | Never spawns in HGEs. Missions or trade only. |
| Exquisite Focus Crystals | Not available | Not available | Never spawns in HGEs. Missions or trade only. |
Biotech Conductors and Exquisite Focus Crystals come from passenger missions such as the Robigo run, wing mining and massacre missions, or cross trading abundant HGE loot at a loss.
Backup for Low and Mid Grade Manufactured
Dav's Hope. Hyades Sector DR-V c2-23, planet A 5. Drive the abandoned settlement loop in an SRV, collect, relog, repeat. Reliable but slow compared to HGEs.
2. Imperial Shielding Deep Dive
This is the single most valuable farm because Imperial Shielding is the most abundant Grade 5 manufactured material and the best trade currency at a Material Trader.
Parameter Checklist
| Parameter | Requirement | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Controlling faction | Must be Empire aligned | Being inside Imperial territory is not the test. An Independent controlling faction inside Imperial space gives Proto Alloys instead. |
| Powerplay control | Irrelevant | Does not affect HGE contents at all |
| System state | None, Boom, Election, Expansion, or Investment | Certain states override the default drop. See the override table below. |
| Population | 1,000,000 minimum. Hundreds of millions is better. | Population does not change what drops. It changes how often signals appear. |
| Economy | Irrelevant | Manufactured HGE contents are set by allegiance and state only. Ignore High Tech, Industrial, Refinery filters. |
| Signal timer | 25 or more minutes | Shorter timers still work, you just may not cap in one session |
| Confirmation | Check contacts panel on arrival | Gating can overlap. Occasionally you will drop into something else. |
State Overrides
| If the Empire system is in this state | You get this instead of Imperial Shielding |
|---|---|
| War | Military Grade Alloys |
| Civil War | Military Grade Alloys |
| Outbreak | Pharmaceutical Isolators |
| Civil Unrest | Improvised Components |
States change on the BGS tick. A system that worked yesterday can flip. Verify before you fly.
Re-rolling Signals
If a system shows no HGE, jump to a neighboring system and come back. That resets the instance and generates new signals. This is faster than waiting in place for a respawn. Relogging also works.
Expected Yield
- Each canister is worth 3 units
- Cap per material is 100
- One good signal usually takes you from 0 to 100 in a single visit
- Total time to cap: often under 15 minutes once you are in the right system
Where to Look
- In game Galaxy Map filters. Set allegiance to Empire, then check state and population in the system info panel. Most reliable method.
- edgalaxy.net/hge. Live player reported HGE detections since the last BGS tick, sorted by material.
- Inara Nearest Systems search. Set allegiance, state, and population in one query.
- EDCoPilot. Announces which rare manufactured materials a system can produce as you enter.
- Achenar and the other large Imperial core systems are reliable when not in a war state.
3. Encoded Materials
Method
Jameson Crash Site. System HIP 12099, planet 1 B, coordinates -54.3803 and -50.3575.
- Bring an SRV and a Detailed Surface Scanner.
- Supercruise to the body and use the DSS to scan the planet and reveal the crash site.
- Land nearby and deploy the SRV.
- Drive to the crashed Cobra Mk III.
- Scan every red data beacon with your Data Link Scanner. There are 9 data points.
- Log out to main menu and back in. No need to quit to desktop.
- Repeat from step 5.
The data points were buffed. There used to be 4 giving about 4 units each. There are now 9 giving 30 or more each.
What Drops Where
| Material | Grade | Category | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modified Consumer Firmware | 2 | Encoded Firmware | Jameson site. Slow, needs many relogs. |
| Cracked Industrial Firmware | 3 | Encoded Firmware | Jameson site. Slow, needs many relogs. |
| Atypical Encryption Archives | 4 | Encryption Files | Jameson site. Caps in about one relog. |
| Adaptive Encryptors Capture | 5 | Encryption Files | Jameson site. Can cap in a single pass. |
| Datamined Wake Exceptions | 5 | Wake Scans | Mission rewards, or trade |
| Modified Embedded Firmware | 5 | Encoded Firmware | Passenger missions, or trade |
| Abnormal Compact Emissions Data | 5 | Emission Data | Trade |
| Peculiar Shield Frequency Data | 5 | Shield Data | Trade |
| Classified Scan Fragment | 5 | Data Archives | Trade |
The Efficient Encoded Loop
Do not try to fill all four Jameson materials. Cap Adaptive Encryptors Capture and Atypical Encryption Archives. Fly to the Encoded Material Trader at Ray Gateway, Diaguandri. Trade both down to zero for whatever you actually need. Fly back and repeat. Use a ship with good jump range for the back and forth.
4. Raw Materials
Method
Crystalline Shards. These are biological sites on airless moons that produce Crystalline Clusters rich in Grade 4 raw materials. Two systems cover almost the entire top row. They sit roughly 1500 to 1800 light years from the bubble. An unengineered exploration ship works fine.
Use the DSS to scan the planet. Crystalline Shards appear under Biological signals, not as their own category.
Grade 4 Raw Locations
| Material | System | Body | Latitude | Longitude |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polonium | HIP 36601 | C 1 A | -57.4599 | 126.9543 |
| Ruthenium | HIP 36601 | C 1 D | -51.2639 | 14.7291 |
| Tellurium | HIP 36601 | C 3 B | -17.6769 | -55.1800 |
| Technetium | HIP 36601 | C 5 A | 3.5500 | 111.5415 |
| Yttrium | Outotz LS-K D8-3 | B 5 A | -1.9216 | -145.7013 |
| Antimony | Outotz LS-K D8-3 | B 5 C | -62.4905 | 80.2426 |
| Ruthenium (alternate) | Outotz LS-K D8-3 | B 7 B | Not recorded | Not recorded |
| Antimony (alternate) | Slegao GU-W C3-1 | D 6 C | Not recorded | Not recorded |
HIP 36601 tends to be populated with Fleet Carriers, some of which are publicly dockable. That means refuel and repair on site. It also means other commanders, so be aware if you are in Open.
Selenium, the Problem Child
There is no known Crystalline Shard site for Selenium. It only drops from Grade 2 resource nodes. Farm brain trees instead.
| System | Body | Coordinates |
|---|---|---|
| HR 3230 | 3 A A | 52.6000, -165.8786 |
| Kappa-1 Volantis | B 3 F A | Not recorded |
Close to Home Alternative
If you do not want the 1500 light year trip, crashed Anacondas sit inside the bubble. Each has 14 to 17 cargo racks you can shoot open for raw materials. Lower grade, but you can trade up.
| System | Body | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Orrere | 2 B | Crashed Anaconda with cargo racks |
| Koli Discii | C 6 A | Extra data point 2 km away at bearing 250 degrees, abandoned settlement Gregory's Rest |
| HIP 16613 | 1 A | Also an abandoned SRV at bearing 270 degrees with an occupied escape pod nearby |
Raw Material Grid
Raw materials are organized in 7 categories of 4 grades. Trading down within a category is cheap, so capping the Grade 4 of each category effectively fills the whole column.
| Category | Grade 1 | Grade 2 | Grade 3 | Grade 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carbon | Vanadium | Niobium | Yttrium |
| 2 | Phosphorus | Chromium | Molybdenum | Technetium |
| 3 | Sulphur | Manganese | Cadmium | Ruthenium |
| 4 | Iron | Zinc | Tin | Selenium |
| 5 | Nickel | Germanium | Tungsten | Tellurium |
| 6 | Rhenium | Arsenic | Mercury | Polonium |
| 7 | Lead | Zirconium | Boron | Antimony |
5. Material Trader Economics
This is the rule that ties everything together. Farm what is abundant. Buy the rest.
| Trade Direction | Approximate Rate | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Down a grade | Cheap, you gain units | Always fine |
| Same grade, different material | Around 3 to 1 | Acceptable, this is the main use |
| Up a grade | Around 6 to 1 | Expensive, but worth it when a farm is easy |
Traders are category locked. A Manufactured trader only handles manufactured, an Encoded trader only handles encoded, and so on. You cannot convert across categories.
Deliberately over collect the abundant material. Imperial Shielding for manufactured. Adaptive Encryptors Capture for encoded. Whatever Grade 4 raw is closest for raws.
6. Do Not Forget Mission Rewards
Mission material rewards were buffed heavily. A single mission can now hand out 20 or more units of one specific material. That is enough for four fully Grade 5 engineered Frame Shift Drives from one Datamined Wake Exceptions reward.
- Check the mission board every time you dock
- Include passenger missions, they are often the best material payers
- The Robigo passenger run is the standard source for Biotech Conductors and Exquisite Focus Crystals
- Powerplay care packages also contain materials
Missions cover all three categories, and they cost you nothing extra if you are already flying.
7. Useful Tools
| Tool | Address | Use |
|---|---|---|
| HGE Finder | edgalaxy.net/hge | Live HGE detections since the last BGS tick, sorted by material |
| Inara | inara.cz | Nearest Systems search by allegiance, state, population. Also finds nearest Material Traders. |
| Elite Materials | sites.google.com/view/elite-materials | Planetary coordinates for shard and brain tree sites |
| EDCoPilot | Third party voice tool | Announces available rare manufactured materials on system entry |
| In game Galaxy Map | Built in | Most reliable fallback. Filter allegiance and state directly. |
8. Realistic Time Budget
| Task | Rough Time |
|---|---|
| Cap one Grade 5 manufactured material at an HGE | Under 15 minutes |
| Cap Adaptive Encryptors Capture at Jameson | One to two relogs |
| Fill all encoded via Jameson plus trader loops | About 30 minutes a day over 3 days |
| Fill all Grade 4 raws via Crystalline Shards | Two trips, plus the travel out and back |
Once stocked, most commanders only need to repeat this every couple of months.
